City of the Book

When people think of the University of Iowa they think of the Iowa Writer's Workshop, classroom of such famous American writers as John Irving, Jane Smiley, Donald Justice, Rita Dove, and James Alan McPherson. But there is more to this university than a famed belletristic curriculum (think: the Iowa Hawkeyes and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics) and more to the city it inhabits (Summer of the Arts, the Englert Theater) than a venerable institution of higher learning. As the Workshop celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, our city marks the third year of its designation as a UNESCO City of Literature (only one of four such in the world and the only one in the United States). What better time to acknowledge all the ways the City of the Book distinguishes itself and all the individuals past and present, great and small who write, publish and practice the art of the book.
